after isaac came to the region. hundreds of thousands are still without power in the storm zone. many of you will be relaxing and hitting the beach. a major red flag at some of the most popular swimming locations in the country. shocking video and great whites spotted just a wee bit too close to shore. >> yeah, some actually on shore. >> yeah. first this morning, let's get to ron claiborne in for josh elliott. many developing stories. and they're big ones. >> good morning to you, sam and lara, and everyone. we begin with that breaking news. a rare attack this morning outside the u.s. consulate in peshawar, pakistan. one of the most brazen attacks against americans in that country in recent years. abc's muhammad lila is in the region following all the developments. >> reporter: as you say, a very deadly day in this region. the u.s. state department is confirming that two americans were hurt when a suicide bomber struck an american suv that just left the american consulate in the city of peshawar.

that blast killed 5 people and injured 19. the blast so strong, so powerful, that it ripped a giant crater right into the middle of the hole and it left that suv a charred, burned-out heap of twisted, mangled metal. ron? >> muhammad lila, thank you for the report. a wildfire exploding in size in california's angeles national forest. an estimated 12,000 labor day visitors and campers were forced to be evacuated. thick smoke could be seen 20 miles away. and in oregon, cameras were rolling as the driver of a monster truck lost control in this race. the vehicle plowed into the crowd of spectators sitting along the sidelines. three people were injured, including a father and his 11-year-old son. but they are all okay. the driver will not be charged. new insight as to why the former navy s.e.a.l. broke the

code of silence writing about the killing of osama bin laden. "the new york times" reports that the author of "no easy day" was upset about being pushed out of s.e.a.l. team six. the new e book is due out today. the reverend sun myung moon has died. the messiah turned his church into a religious movement. known for brainwashing his followers but probably best known for holding mass weddings of his followers. he turned the church into a business empire that included "the washington times" newspaper. he was 92. history made this morning at the u.s. open. thanks to a rain delay, it took until 2:26 in the morning for philipp kohlschreiber to defeat american john isner. that ties the record for the latest match ever.

and south african runner oscar pistorius is apologizing after a stunning loss in the paralympics in england. after the race, he accused the brazilian of wearing blades too long. but he still believes that olvera cheated, but he apologized for the timing of his criticism. he said he should have let the winner have his moment. finally, "gladiator" star russell crowe apparently needed little help from the u.s. coast guard after getting lost on his kayak this weekend. he and a friend were in the waters off of the coast of long island this weekend. nightfall came, they became disoriented. they hailed a passing coast guard boat and were taken to a nearby harbor. that's crowe with the coast guard crew there. he denies he had to be rescued. he's in new york filming "noah" based on a biblical story.

>> about a boat? >> yeah. he was master in commander. he was a captain of a ship. >> i'm sure he was not happy about having to be rescued. >> when the coast guard comes to get you, officially a rescue. >> bad news, russell. >> all right, ron, we thank you. we move to the race for the white house. the democratic national convention kicks off tomorrow. and things already off to a shaky start with an incident involving two allegedly drunken delegates. it's "your voice, your vote." cecilia vega joins us. from charlotte, north carolina, good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: the party has not started here. the california delegation, they may be nursing a bit of a hangover this morning. two california democratic delegates partied into the wee hours of sunday morning. in the lobby of their charlotte hotel, one was so drunk he apparently passed out and was taken to the hospital. the other, allegedly belligerent

with hotel staff, he was threatened with arrest after falsely telling police he was a congressman. it was all witnessed by a "los angeles times" reporter. >> he was very belligerent. at the point that they called the police. they asked him for identification. he refused. >> reporter: california democratic party officials asked the man to leave the convention. today, he's out. the other, released from the hospital and allowed to stay. a spokesman for the delegation said in a statement, the delegate has apologized to hotel staff and agreed to leave the hotel and forego official delegation activities in charlotte. but tomorrow, the real party begins. all week, democrats will roll out some of the biggest names in politics and hollywood. michelle obama, bill clinton, the president himself, to superstars like eva longoria, mary j. blige and the black by the peas. >> we don't have the problems

>> good morning, lara, how are you? >> good. i want to start with the incident with the two allegedly drunken delegates. certainly, not the way the obama campaign would want to start this week. is it a big deal? >> no, i don't think it's a big deal. we have to remember, we think of conventions, political conventions, as ways for politicians and parties to present their case to the american people. for thousands of delegates, these are conventions like any other. that means a lot of men behaving badly. >> so you say present their case. what are the top three things you think need to happen this week for obama? >> first, he has to rally the base. that's easier to do, of course when you're a candidate than when you're an incumbent. but he has to get the voters that he needs to turn out excited to vote for him. young people, latinos, women, labor. he needs to make an economic case to the ambivalent obama voters at home. he needs to present an economic case.

what will the next four years look like. why would the economy be better the next four years than the past four years? and the last thing is make people feel proud about having voted for him in 2008. even liberals say one of the most devastating lines of romney had is what kind of a presidency has obama had if the best feeling you had was the day you voted for him? he turns to turn that around, lara. >> trying to duplicate that optimism of four years ago. and i know on wednesday, bill clinton is the main speaker. at a time, there was bad blood between the two. is that all behind them now? >> it's mostly behind them. there's some tension between presidents from the same party. bill clinton and jimmy carter didn't get along. but obama needs clinton. he needs him to make the case. there's nothing a guy like clinton likes better than feeling needed. he will be there wednesday, making his case, lara. >> front and center, the attention spotlight on him. thanks, jake. george and diane will lead the primetime coverage on the

are expected to crest finally today. shannon orlando is working to clean up the mess isaac left last week. she's drying out family photos and hoping she'll not have to evacuate her 4-year-old daughter again. are you worried the water will come back up again? >> it might. i can't worry. i mean, i can't worry. there's nothing i can do about it. if we're told to leave, we will and deal with it. >> reporter: there are so many people here just trying to deal with it. hundreds of thousands have had no electricity, no air conditioning for six days. >> i can't take the heat. >> reporter: the heat index this weekend topped 105 as storm victims struggled to clean up. >> it's steaming hot. we are surviving off the generator. >> reporter: there is some relief in sight. intergy, the largest power

company, says they expect 90% of their customers will have the power on and more importantly the air conditioning today, by the end of the day. we should point out, the president of the united states will be here this afternoon visiting with some of isaac's victims. sam? >> always important to make the trip down, especially when folks have had a tough time from a storm like this. one of the most -- i think important and stunning moments, ginger zee is live here hides has not just the flooding. we expected that. we expected the winds. but 44 tornadoes from the system as it moved up through america's heartland. that, to me, was an incredible number. >> so much above average. we don't usually that many. it's all weekend and continues the severe weather threat. you believe we're still talking about this guy. it's not isaac anymore. not remnants or leftovers. it's interacting with other things and what that means to you is a whole lot of rain in a whole lot of places from the carolinas through atlanta, birmingham today. one to two inches. tomorrow, here's where it gets interesting. everybody is going back to school and work. you get two to three inches from north of philadelphia to boston. i have to leave you with the

retired from a tech firm to pursue his dream of flying vintage planes, was killed. >> we don't see anything at this time. we want to make sure we have it documented, we've collected everything. >> reporter: plane toox to the sky on sunday in his honor. >> this is what he would have wanted. >> reporter: since 1991, air show accidents in north america have killed 72 pilots and performers. for the 12 million spectators who enjoy them every year, air shows are almost always safe. >> there hasn't been a fatality since 1952. that's because of strict rules in place. for nearly 60 years. >> reporter: aircraft must stay 500 to 1500 feet away from crowds. and avoid flying toward people. aerobatic pilots must be tested regularly. there are new changes for the very different world of air racing. after this p-51 mustang slammed into the crowd last year in

tracking the movement of sharks off the new england coast. they've been coming closer and closer to shore. these are not just any sharks. they're great whites. one of the most powerful predators in the ocean. as great white sharks like this one swarm the beaches of cape cod, normally packed with swimmers on labor day weekend, officials are ordering everyone out of the water. >> they were definitely very close. we just keep everybody safe and keep them out of the water. >> reporter: peter motter took his family on a whale-watching trip. what they found was not a whale. >> my daughter spotted a fin off in the distance. as we got closer, it was clear it was a shark. >> we thought the shark would come up from under the boat. >> reporter: but the nearly 14-foot great white was more concerned with its lunch. families watched as the massive predator tore a seal to pieces. the shark is just feet from their boat. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: throughout new

england, it's been a real-life shark week. dozens of great whites have been spotted across the region's beaches. on the border of massachusetts and rhode island, this 13-footer washed up on shore and quickly drew a crowd -- >> that's awesome! >> reporter: -- eager for a look up close at this animal. >> i mean, he's stone dead. but he's got "jaws" written all over it. >> reporter: niko has been tracking the shark population for four years. he says the shark sightings have spiked because of the exploding seal population over the last few years. and that swimmers should be on the lookout. >> don't swim near the seals. if the seals appear startled, that's a pretty good indicator that a shark's in the area. >> and authorities say the best way to stay safe is to stay near a life guard tower. >> they can see the fin in the distance. let's get a check on the weather today.

cruise's romantic life and the role of scientology. the new issue of "vanity fair" alleges a top secret process to find the megastar a girlfriend. abc's linsey davis is here with the details. do tell. >> good morning to you, lara. the "vanity fair" describes what a call a secret wife auditioning process. and talk about the actress that almost landed the role of a lifetime. as the love interest of tom cruise. it turns out, the opportunity for her to become his leading lady was a mission impossible. as tom cruise attempts to move on and heal from his very public divorce from katie holmes, a new bombshell, as alleged secrets from the "risky business" star's past begin to emerge. in "vanity fair's" latest issue special correspondent under claims of what she calls a top secret process of finding a

girlfriend for tom cruise, headed by the wife of scientology chief david miscavige. scientology folks people deny any such project. but according to "vanity fair," the organization was seeking and auditioning actresses strictly scientologists, as a real-life girlfriend for tom cruise. they were allegedly told they were auditioning for a training film. asking what do you think of tom cruise? >> coming on top of his divorce, it's one more thing. nobody wants to be exposed to critical articles like this. true or not, if it's not true, it's frustrating. if it is true, it's some of the most personal moments of his life. so i'm sure it's just one more headache for tom cruise right now. >> reporter: "vanity fair" claims nazanin boniadi, an iranian-born london-raised actress who was a regular on "general hospital" and recognized for her role in "ironman" was the selected one. and that in a month-long preparation was told to lose her

braces, her highlights, and her boyfriend, and even signed confidentiality agreement. the article goes further saying when the pair first met in november 2004, that's when boniadi first sensed this was possibly going to be an arranged marriage. and although they spent that first night together, they did not have sex. according to "vanity fair" cruise told boniadi, i've never felt this way before. his affection became overwhelming, with him reportedly telling her, i get more love from an extra than you. the article adds that boniadi moved into cruise's home, shared a bedroom and was given a credit card issued in the name of cruise's company. her only source of money. the article says the relationship was over in january 2005. just three months before the star publicly dated katie holmes because cruise wanted someone with her own power, like nicole kidman. according to the article, boniadi was then sent to a scientology center where she alleged broke down and revealed

her situation to a friend which violated her confidentiality agreement. as punishment, she was scrubbing toilets and digging ditches in the middle of the night. the church of scientology, however, denies this, saying the church does not punish people, especially in that manner. >> people who are skeptical of tom cruise and his scientology connection are going to go, see, i told you so. the bottom line is, i don't think it will make a difference in his movie career. >> reporter: tom cruise's p.r. person released this statement. to abc news. lies in a different font are still lies designed to sell magazines. we reached out to the church of scientology, it did not respond. and it's also worth noting katie holmes did not become a scientologist until she started dating cruise. and this entire "vanity fair" story was down without her participation. if it's true, it's a lot easier than dating. >> auditioning? >> yeah. you might have a point here. >> well, i mean you have to get a team together. they have to scout out.

publicly about her breakup with former nfl star chad johnson formerly known as ocho cinco. she opens up about the infamous head-butting incident. she talked about ending their marriage after just six weeks. she talks about that with abc's amy robach in an exclusive sitdown. >> we're getting ready to get married. >> how do you feel about it? >> i am stoked. >> reporter: millions watched as evelyn lozada and chad "ocho cinco" johnson fell in love before their eyes. >> i'm not about [ bleep ]. >> reporter: she, the star of "basketball wives." with the fondness for high-profile athletes. >> i can't get my hair wet! >> reporter: and he the larger-than-life football player. who smashed records in an nfl career and danced into our homes on "dancing with the stars." it seemed the sky was the limit for these two. but the fairy tale came crashing down in an instant. >> he grabbed me right here and head-butted me.

all i felt was, like, you know, blood coming down my face. >> reporter: it ended with evelyn getting six stitches in her forehead and chad getting arrested. >> mr. johnson, you've been charged with battery, domestic violence. >> reporter: and now a divorce filing after just 41 days. it all began when evelyn says she found a receipt in chad's car for condoms. >> it was three weeks after my wedding. >> reporter: she says when she confronted her husband, he denied that he had been unfaithful, saying he bought them for a friend. >> i knew he was lying. i told him, i said, i'm not sticking by you through this. i don't care if my marriage is the laughingstock of the world. and then the next thing i know, he head-butted me. >> reporter: chad johnson declined our request for an interview about what he says happened that night. in a statement to police, he claimed that evelyn had head-butted him. even though she appeared to be the victim with six stitches, many didn't believe her story.

here's why. so when word of the head-butting got out, the internet lit up in a firestorm of controversy. comments like she definitely deserved it. and she's a bully. do you understand why people have said the things they said? >> i understand it. but i also think that it's like saying, well, look at that woman, look what she had on. that's why she got raped. you know, i just feel like -- i feel it's a little unfair. whatever the perception of me is on "basketball wives," that doesn't justify what happened that day. >> reporter: the show, about to start its fifth season, has long been controversial because of what many consider excessive violence. there's a petition with 30,000 signatures asking viacom to take "basketball wives" off the air. and chad was fired from the

welcome back, everybody. mitch albom's books have sold 30 million copies worldwide, including the runaway best seller "tuesdays with morrie." he's joining us today to talk about his new book, about the passage of time, called "the timekeeper." and it goes on sale tomorrow. welcome, mitch. >> thank you, lara. >> tell us about the prop. >> everyone understands what this is. it's time running out. you put it in front of an animal, they don't know. only man counts time. and only man worries about time running out. that ended up being the backdrop for this magical novel. >> i loved reading about how you became inspired to write "the timekeeper." will you share that with us? >> as you get older, you think about how am i spending my time? think about all the time sayings. past time, lose time, kill time, waste time. there's a million expressions. we never think about how we're living. i created the story about the man who invented one of these

things. he gets punished and has to live for eternity to see the reaction of everything he created. he becomes father time. he comes back in our time, when all this is going on, and he has to influence two people on earth and teach them the true meaning of time. one a teenage girl, the other, a rich old man. if he can do that, he's freed from his punishment. it deals with the whole passage of time. >> was there an event that happened to you that you said, wow, maybe i am running out of time? >> when you're a kid, you look forward to your birthdays. when you're an adult, you start dreading them. my parents have gotten older. if you read "tuesdays with morrie" and "the five people you meet in heaven" there's a lot of people talking about how they're spending their time. there's a part of the book, he says, listen, there's a reason that the heavens limit your days. what could be the reason?

to make each one of them precious. and if you think about that, that's really the essence of this story. if we had all the time in the world, we could do anything we wanted. live here, there, marry this one, that one. it's making the choices of how you have to live your life that makes you decide. >> your book teaches that lesson, so does robin roberts. she's reminded us and shown us, through example, to be in the moment. that's the essence of your book. it was deeply touching. as is your work in haiti. i want to get to that. it's incredible what you have done. >> i operate an orphanage down there. ever since the earthquake. there, nobody wears watches. the kids don't have cell phones, computers. time moves at a whole different level. >> do the days feel slower? >> totally. i mean, totally. you're just there about teaching the children, eating, getting through the day, and surviving. that taught me a great lesson. i wrote a lot of it going back and forth.

♪ up in the morning and off to school ♪ the new school year is here. i can't believe it. we want you and your kids starting off on the right track. gail simmons is rear now to show us how to break out of that lunchbox and get into some healthy, fun, friendly treats that kids will think are super cool. >> we're doing something new. kids can play with, have fun with. it's healthy. i'm making really easy slow cooker meat balls. make it, put it in the pressure cooker, let it go. it's using fresh ingredients. a can of crushed tomatoes.

a little bit of garlic. some chili flake is if you want for spice. tomato paste. and some fresh basil. beautiful, fresh basil. a drizzle of good quality, extra virgin olive oil. >> what can i do for the meat? >> let this go for three hours. i have ground chuck. you can use ground chicken, turkey. if you don't want to use beef. i have a little bit of garlic. you want to put that in? >> sure. >> some salt, pepper, breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese and an egg to bind it. you're going to mix it up. you get the picture. you make really shall balls pip like them small. it's easier for kids.

mix them up, the small balls, put them into that done sauce and let them cook. one hour, done. >> three hours altogether? >> right. you can use lettuce cups, make a classic hero. you can use it alone with sauce. >> for dinner with mom and dad as well. >> dinner, lunch. beautiful sandwiches. >> i love the idea of giving them veggies they might actually eat. >> we want them to eat the veggies. i don't want to use packaged sauces and dips. i want to make my own. it's buttermilk, yogurt, salt, person, hot sauce. dig in, fresh, crunchy. pack it up in the beautiful boxes. they're fun for the kids. >> can i double dip, please?

>> sure. a little bit of heat. >> if they eat the veggies, they get dessert. >> you get our outrageous pretty dell bars. they're crunchy, salty, chocolaty. they're made with condensed milk. they're rich and delicious. no way the kid's bringing this one home. >> how do we make these? >> they're simple. mixing in condensed milk, brown sugar, flour, salt. forget the lunchbox drinking boxes. there's a lot of sugar. make a healthier drink. this is a smoothie. bananas, raspberries. tons of energy, fiber. how beautiful is hat? >> i love it. >> drink this for breakfast and lunch.
